The Gnomon Workshop

Introduction to Clarisse v4

with Alessandro Cangelosi

Description

In this workshop, Alessandro Cangelosi guides you through Isotropix Clarisse V4. Beginning with the basic workflow needed to get up and running, Alessandro then delves into the various features and tools used to create a complete natural environment while taking advantage of Clarisse's powerful ability to handle complex scenes that contain billions of polygons. Alessandro shows how to customize the user interface, manage assets within the browser and attribute editor, work with objects, merge hard surface and vegetation assets in the Alembic file format and navigate 3D views with interactive real-time rendering. He then covers depth-of-field, the creation of shading groups and materials using the node-based material editor and guides you through managing a scene in Clarisse by organizing groups, contexts and combiners. Using particle cloud and particle baking, he efficiently scatters a large amount of plants and shows the optimal settings for pathtracer quality and speed. Finally, Alessandro takes you through the lighting setup for a large-scale environment using sun light, dome light, IES profiles and many other lighting techniques. At the end of this workshop, you should have a solid, introductory understanding of Clarisse with the knowledge to create a multitude of different environments, complete with shaders and lighting.

Alessandro Cangelosi

Lighting TD and FX TD

Alessandro Cangelosi's passion for technology, science and art have led him from software development to VFX. Beginning with generalist positions in small productions, he eventually progressed to Lighting/FX TD on commercials, video game cinematics and films including such projects as Suspiria, 2012, Independence Day 2, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands, Dead Rising 3 and Wolfstein: The New Order. He has also worked on national and international documentaries and developed plug-ins and custom tools for Autodesk 3ds Max. Alessandro is head of Proteus VFX School and teaches Houdini at ViFX in Italy.

  • Alessandro has a proven track record and deep understanding of creating shaders that reproduce natural phenomena - like sand, ice, water surfaces, and lava. These are technical achievments, but Alessandro has a passion for cinematography, composition, lighting, and color. Having a solid foundation in these areas will always create better work - when artistic prowess meets technological understanding and not the other way around. Alessandro has helped us immensely on difficult effects shots, and we were able to trust his judgement on how a shot should be lit and composed. He always concentrates on the importance of a shot, its form and subject, before dealing with all the technology that goes into producing the end result. Alessandro's careful observations and strong technical skills have made it a pleasure working with him.
